From my friend's wood and metal work to taking portraits for an event at the Santa Fe, NM, Lensic theatre for a Leonian Foundation artist talk, to being the set photographer for a friend's film, these commissioned works are from various projects I have had the pleasure of working on. Our Progenitor /pro'jen?d?r/

noun | a person or thing from which a person, animal, or plant is descended or originates; an ancestor or parent.

Some scientists agree that our early ancestors - Homo Erectus - first appeared in Africa 1-2 million years ago. They spread throughout the world, eventually evolving into ancient humans. The Out-of-Africa theory believes that modern humans evolved in Africa and gradually replaced all ancient humans roughly 30,000 years ago. Homo Sapiens were the only humans left on the planet.

Our ancestors continue to reemerge into the new world, deceased fauna surrounding them as they absorb new energy left behind.

Now, I invite you to envision yourself as the next progenitor of this world, as you soon will be.

Wernick's focus includes self-portraits, the natural world, fashion, and abstract nude photography while highlighting the world's controversial, social and environmental issues. In collaborating with her subjects - herself, nature, and others - she utilizes each experience to uncover the softness and rarity that can lie within connection, self-love, vitality, and the human psyche.

Don't Forget Us, SFUAD! ~ P.H.

Outdoor Installation

This series of pothole flower pots and disposable images bring attention to Santa Fe University of Art and Design’s tendency to disregard the college's campus, and facilities' care and upkeep. Year after year, I watched these potholes around campus grow in size and depth, never being addressed.

The title, Don’t Forget US SFUAD. - P.H. came from SFUADs all too familiar focus on ludicrous projects than what should be considered a higher priority, such as upkeep and safety around campus.

Together with friend and fellow SFUADian, Omar Lazri, we built outdoor installations inside the potholes, including flowers, imitation caution tape, and an array of small signs. We figured, why not fill the potholes with something useful and enjoyable, something that will make you want to drive around instead of forcing you to?

One month after the initial pothole installation, asphalt had filled each of the potholes around campus. Every single small and large pothole was now filled with solid ground.

Artist Statement
Wernick's focus includes self-portraits, the natural world, fashion, and abstract nude photography while highlighting the world's controversial, social and environmental issues. Inspired by Baroque, Impressionist, Surrealist, and Contemporary artists and poets, Wernick evolves her identity daily through various mediums.

Process Statement
As a visual artist, Wernick explores the world and her identity in the following mediums - oil and acrylic paints, ink, analog, and digital photography, alternative processes (tintypes and cyanotypes), collage, video, installation (indoor and outdoor), mixed media, and natural paints using earth and mineral pigments and organic ingredients.

Biography

Whitney Erin Wernick (b. 1995) received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photographic and Studio Art practices from Santa Fe University of Art and Design in 2018. Wernick is an American artist who shares her connection with her body, nature, and today's world using an unforgiving and in-your-face creative technique. Wernick's focus includes self-portraits, the natural world, fashion, and abstract nude photography while highlighting the world's controversial, social and environmental issues. In collaborating with her subjects - herself, nature, and others - she utilizes each experience to uncover the softness and rarity that can lie within connection, self-love, vitality, and the human psyche.
