Artist Statement
Katharine MacDaid’s work provides a viewpoint from which to understand a sense of anxiety fundamental to the female experience. Returning to formative locations and using photography as a pretext, MacDaid subjects herself to chance. Alone in the landscape and without any fixed plan, she seeks to confront her own vulnerability (and in turn her strength). An atmosphere of unease spreads throughout the images making the viewer feel uncertain; even an attractive world can be a menacing place.
Katharine MacDaid was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1979 and grew up in the Sultanate of Oman, America, Northern Ireland and England. After graduating with an MA in Photography from the Royal College of Art, she moved back to Oman for several years to make the work that became 'Of Calling Shapes and Beckoning Shadows'. Since returning to the UK she has spent time working on a book project set in Alaska, while continuing with a number of long-term projects. Katharine’s work has been exhibited widely including, Braga Photo Festival, Arles Photo Festival, Ghent Photo Festival, Kolga Tbilisi Photo, Macro Testaccio Rome, Palm Springs Photo Festival and the Magenta Foundation. She currently lives and works in London, England.
