My pictures interrogate the creation of necessary illusions and the sense of what's genuine. The line between what is real and what is produced becomes blurred. I play a lot with fiction and reality. Within this clearance gap, when your imagination is activated, the real magic happens. The photographic image gives that feeling of something that exists but when you look at it, you hesitate, a doubt subsists. Photography is elaborated to disorient the viewer and destabilize his vantage. Here, the truth isn't opposed to the false and the illusion can be much stronger than reality. Everything is diverted and metaphorized from the dark forest. The narrative is built like an intrigue. Beware of the photographer magical skills to reshape the landscape! Unexpected characters are appearing inside the frame and call on our imagination. The shooting reveals a scenography close to a cinematic sequence. The characters explore a luxuriant vegetation. They are caught in the movement, closely related to the environment. They love the snapshot and the surprise, the bright flash correspond to the revelation. Entertaining, unusual and surreal, the scenes contain both dramatic tension and lightness of burlesque. The viewer is informed, it maintains a suspicion with the photography and with the illusionist-photographer. What's happening under the surface, under the gloss of appearances?
Olivia Lavergne was born in Paris in 1979. After studying literature, she turned to photography and from 2003 on has been working as an artist. She studied in the Université Paris VIII and to Ecole Nationale des Arts Décoratifs. Olivia completed a Master degree in Photography, then a Master in Contemporary Art. In her pictures, staging has always flirted with reality, ever since her first works were exhibited in 2010 during the Voies off at the Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie (Arles). At present, Olivia explore in a more personal way a dense tropical forest, a luxuriant vegetation. "I focus on fiction. I like to create new forms, new visual and sensitive possibilities for story. In my pictures, the landscape is a scope for play and playful experimentation where reality sets in motion continually, departures from fiction."
