Artist Statement
Postcards sent and saved from 1960’s and 70’s Middle American vacations form the illusionary foundation for my photographic art. These pictures create an uneasy tension between truth and fiction. They cite artifacts from the time, such as roadside motels and vacation destinations that refer to memories of family journeys. The journeys are mixed with dreamlike symbolism to create ironic images that go beyond memory. They are staged dramas communicating the loneliness and alienation that accompanies the American dream.
Process Statement
The photo-based images I create are derived from ubiquitous postcards from the 1960s and 70s. Through the use of digital technology, fragments from the postcards are enlarged, added to, subtracted from and manipulated to create a nostalgic effect in a highly abstract contemporary medium.
