This ongoing project is about Africa as a continent of contrasts.

Contrast in the colors, in the situations and in the facts...

Africa is not only war and misery, it's also everyday's life, away from crowds and chaos. Colorful and graphic.

In order to capture this silence in the middle of densely inhabited regions, I work late at night and early morning, when all is quiet.

This project is open and has been shot, until now, in the region situated between - and including - Mali and Nigeria.

More photographs will be added, or subtracted, as time goes by.

The Evening Star

Somewhere in Africa, a Catholic Mission managed by two Nuns assisted by a small staff is hosting young mothers, often in their teens and in profound distress.

They are generally servant girls or 'small hands' coming from the country side in order to constitute their dowry.

In the city, they are treated as slaves by their employers who often abuse them, 'forget' the pay days and end up throwing them in the street once they get close to giving birth.

Some others are sent to this community by the Vice Squad following a rape or an attempted infanticide.

They are welcomed by the Sisters who give them tenderness, healthcare and even provide them with basic hospitalization when necessary. They receive education in all respects and are taught to become independent for a brighter future.

Introduction

'Washi Film is a new handcrafted orthochromatic photographic film made by Lomig Perrotin with traditional Japanese paper and compatible with all kinds of large and medium format cameras.'

[washi] is my artisanal limited edition book about Washi Film and shot on Washi Film.

Here are the 12 photographs to be found inside it.

'C'est une série de clichés-verre, pour lesquels je grattais et peignais directement les négatifs, qui est à l'origine de mon inspiration. J’aime travailler la matière même de la photographie constituée par le négatif original.'

'L’idée en soi du négatif photographique est intéressante, dans le sens où elle nous conduit à la notion de potentialité. Le façonner nous apprend à faire preuve de discernement.'

'Il y a quelque chose de magique dans une belle image, et cette magie doit pouvoir être partagée, conservée et protégée, comme une matrice. Ce sont là les fonctions essentielles du négatif.'

'Cela m’a amené à explorer d’autres possibilités, à chercher d’autres supports, qui pourraient être travaillés différemment.'

'L’idée d’un support papier est apparue comme une évidence. Utilisée par les pionniers au XIXème siècle, elle est à l’origine de la notion de négatif qui a permis l’émancipation de la photographie par rapport à la peinture.'

'Cependant, je ne voulais pas simplement reproduire une technique ancienne, mais créer un nouveau médium qui puisse être facilement employé dans la plupart des appareils encore utilisés aujourd’hui.'

'Dans la pénombre du laboratoire, j’ai cherché dans plusieurs directions, la cire, l’albumine, le calque, la gélatine… Je me suis égaré. Et j’ai finalement découvert, par hasard, un papier simple, comme les images que je souhaitais obtenir.'

'Ce papier traditionnel, le Washi, est fabriqué depuis des siècles au Japon. Léger et solide, il conjugue à la fois simplicité et noblesse.'

'J’ai rapidement compris que ce support fibreux et profond avait déjà en soi sa propre cohérence, sa propre âme, et qu’il n’avait pas besoin d’être retravaillé. C’est à mes yeux un médium complet qui se suffit à lui-même.'

Process Statement
I see my work as an organized transcription of the chaotic truth.

Mixed emotions and feelings.
Various supports, ideas and methods.
Plurality of visions and perceptions.

I like experimenting different techniques, mixing digital and analog processes or experimental film supports.

Since a photograph is 'a suspended moment', my personal work is always produced and sold as single edition prints.
I am very attached to this idea of uniqueness.

Biography

'It’s hard to put into words what it is that GD2R embodies in his work, but maybe that’s the point.

He has such an innate understanding of structure that his subjects are always perfectly supported by everything around them. Some might call this technical ability, but I disagree. Technical ability is certainly present but to reduce him to a technician would be sacrilege, he’s an artist.

The reason I know that his talent is far from just technical is that he is willing to abandon all traditional sense of structure to allow a perfect alive moment to exist in his work. He isn’t bound by the rules of photography.

If this alive moment happens to involve a person he is shooting, it will have come about because of the trust he inspires in his subjects. This is something he does without realising, his urge to communicate is so clearly present that we never see the camera when we look at his subjects, we see the people, and they see us.

Gilles is strong minded, he knows when a picture just works and isn’t afraid to stand by his gut instinct. He makes darkness beautiful, but not by pretending it isn’t darkness. Equally, if there is joy present in his photographs, it is not about showing you the joy, it’s about making you feel it.

There is real music in his photography, his ability to use structure sometimes plays to this, but more so, his pictures reverberate. The nature of photography at its core is a still image, Gilles doesn’t try to pretend that pictures should seem like they are moving to be alive, instead he charges them with an energy that you feel.
Stripped back to bare physics, music is just vibration, but this vibration affects us, moves us, Gilles pictures vibrate.'
