Tom “TBow” Bowden (°1958, Los Angeles, United States)
In 1964, on my birthday, I was given a baseball glove, a bible and a camera. All nice gifts but only one stepped forward with a clear voice and said, “Tom, I am your camera. There will be others but I am your first camera. Now… get to work because if you look thru my lens long enough and hard enough I will reveal fantastic things that others can’t see.” Many photographs later I found out these “fantastic things” were humans. Since then, I think I’ve always looked at people as though I were seeing them for the first time. How odd they are…. how creature like.
In creating photographs, I often find myself attracted to a rather dreamy “other world” where I ply my craft. Often, if afforded a few extra seconds with someone on the street I invite them to partner with me in the creation of a portrait. To create my images, I like to talk with people, earn some trust and then collaborate with them in creating something that helps me in my never ending journey to explore what it’s like to be human. I hope you enjoy my work.
