Richard Snodgrass lives in Pittsburgh, Pa with his wife Marty and two indomitable black-and-white female cats, raised from feral kittens, named Frankie and Becca.
KITCHEN THINGS: AN ALBUM OF VINTAGE UTENSILS was published in Fall, 2013 by Skyhorse Publishing. In September 2011, Carnegie Mellon University Press published his book of photographs and prose on the Flight 93 Temporary Memorial, AN UNCOMMON FIELD. In 1989 Viking Press published his novel, THERE’S SOMETHING IN THE BACK YARD
His grants and fellowships include: Artist in Residence, LightWorks, University of Syracuse; Artist in Residence, Helene Wurlitzer Foundation, Taos, New Mexico; and a Fellowship from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. His photographs are in collections across the country including the permanent collection of the Oakland Museum of Art, where he also served as special curator/printer for an exhibition of Dorothea Lange.
Selections of his photography and writing from his series KITCHEN THINGS are regularly featured in TABLE Magazine. His short stories and essays have appeared in the New England Review and Bread Loaf Quarterly, South Dakota Review, California Review, among others.
A portfolio of his photographs and writings from the series AND THEN THERE WAS STEEL was featured in LensWork, Vol 62, Jan – Feb 2006 (the series was formerly known as AFTERIMAGE for its exhibition at the Heinz Regional History Center, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institute, during 2005-2006).
Richard holds a B.A. in English from the University of California, Berkeley and an M.F.A. in Photography from the California College of Arts and Crafts. He was a long-time student of master photographer Oliver Gagliani, and served as teaching assistant at Gagliani’s renowned Virginia City Workshops, specializing in large camera formats and the Zone System.
