Introduction
“pavement” emerged in late 2016 during walks in Miami, Florida from Shorecrest uptown to Brickell downtown. i moved to Miami in 2016 to pursue a different lifestyle after twenty years in New York City. Shorecrest, where i live, is not far from Little Haiti and Wynwood, both centers of the Miami art world. MiMo, Miami’s mid-century modern architectural district, is nearby as is South Beach, Miami Beach’s Art Deco district, both centers of mid-century architecture.
i drew inspiration from Miami’s artistic and aesthetic atmosphere, particularly the aforementioned architecture with its uncluttered simplicity and retro-futuristic beauty. mid-century modern has roots in the Bauhaus and Constructivist movements. the spareness and geometry of my work is inspired by these architectural and artistic forebears.
the work in "pavement" is also synergistic with graffiti art. Miami is an international center for graffiti artists and muralists. their canvases are walls, and their work is implicitly ephemeral as new waves of artists come through to paint over earlier pieces. i find art on a similar outdoor canvas: the pavement. here too compositions are implicitly ephemeral as streets and sidewalks are worn by weather and time.
