Artist Statement
Brett’s personal work to date has been exhibited nationally and internationally, through numerous solo and group shows, publications and competitions. Through her professional development Brett has experience of working to commission within the arena of healthcare and co-ordinating community art projects committed to issues that she feels are unresolved within the media.
Process Statement
Aesthetics of the unfamiliar, body and mind disturbances, presence and performance within the domestic space are areas that underpin Brett's practice. Since 2005 she has been making short films/installations that encompass ‘everyday’ living with neurological and psychological conditions.
Her aims as an artist are to encourage the viewer to ‘see’ rather than just ‘look’. She uses processes that problematise the ethics of exchange, representation and relationships between artist and subject to challenge conventional perceptions of ‘otherness’ through the use of photography, moving image and sound.
Karen Brett is an artist & filmmaker who graduated with a BA in Documentary Photography from University of Wales, Newport & an MA in Photography from London College of Communication.
