Artist Statement
My best work is the product of curiosity: photographs I never intended to take, in places I never intended to visit. My color work -- all digital now -- is a staple, but curiosity led me to take my black & white landscape photographs with disposable plastic cameras. It's a low-tech and unassuming technique that produces amazing results and the wide format emphasizes the vastness of the American West.
Process Statement
I shoot these images with a Kodak "Fun Saver panoramic 35" disposable camera. First, I tear off the cardboard cover, pry open the camera, and remove the color print film. Using a fine file I modify the frame inside. Then, I load it with Tri-X black and white film. Some of my disposables have had hundreds of rolls of film through them. The camera has a two element plastic 25mm lens with a fixed f/12 aperture and single 1/125th of a second shutter speed. I adjust exposure and contrast with filtration and film processing times.
