Artist Statement
My work explores the ways that grand, intense struggles are transformed into quiet, daily dramas for those involved. I am drawn to extreme crises that become internalized, even routine, to the communities that they touch. It is the moments of common humanity, not high drama, that interest me, as I believe that those moments cause the strongest bond between a viewer and an image. I aim to show moments of daily life that feel like intense drama, forcing the viewer to fully engage with the image in order to understand what is happening and what it means for the subjects involved.I am most interested in evoking understanding and empathy, as opposed to inspiring disbelief and sympathy.
