Artist Statement
The coordinates of the human have become a central topic of my photography ever since my civil service in a hospice. They connect my book projects, in which I deal with love and family, life and transience. My photographs are created out of the need to find answers to my questions in life, as well as to help the people I portray and the people who look at my pictures.
I am happy to be living my dream of being a photographer. My work has awarded me with grants, publications, and the opportunity to show my projects in several countries. More so, it has rewarded me with the opportunity to meet interesting people, engage in meaningful conversations, and enrich my life and the lives of others.
Process Statement
In my book »Purple Brown Grey White Black«, the dying man and his dealing with illness and death are the topic of my photography. For the period of one year, I have accompanied people through photography, who have lived and died in a hospice. While these people mostly could look back on a long life, for my long-term project „Princesses and Football Stars“, I portray families who have a child with a life-threatening illness. Photographs frequently serve as a document for preserving
cherished memories. These photographs depict how families deal with the illness of their child and the finiteness of life, while the concepts of life as well as the family structure change over the years.
As a Fulbright grantee in San Francisco, I took images of LGBT [Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender] families and couples, as an investigation on the shift in understanding family life. This project is both, a declaration of love to this diverse and liberal city and also an encounter with people, their concepts of life, and their dreams.
