Ashok Sinha was born in Calcutta, India, and has been living and working in New York City for the past two decades. He has shot projects in more than thirty-five countries and his photography has been published in numerous sources including The New York Times, National Geographic, BBC and LIFE.com.
The American Society of Media Photographers recently honored Ashok as Best of 2012 and his work was featured on the cover of the organization’s award bulletin. Ashok is also the recipient of industry awards from Photo District News, Lucie Foundation, Association of Photographers UK, World Photographic Arts, and the BBC.
While many of the images are intended for mass publication, Sinha’s exploration of place has led him to record multiple series as a fine artist and his work has been exhibited by The Museum of The City of New York, International Center of Photography, Mixed Greens Gallery, Umbrella Arts Gallery in New York City, New Orleans Photo Alliance in Louisiana, and included in the permanent collection of The Center for Fine Art Photography in Colorado.
In addition to being a photographer, Ashok founded the non-profit organization named The Cartwheel Initiative shortly after his visit to war- torn Northern Sri Lanka in 2010. The goal of the organization is to help young people build bridges within their communities and across ethnic and social divisions using photography and multimedia.
Ashok has been invited to speak about his work at International Center of Photography, The New School University (Parsons), City University of New York, Columbia University, and at B&H in New York City.
