“Not Alone: Exploring Bonds Between and With Members of the Armed Forces is an expansive exhibition featuring works by local and national artists and veteran artists that have been engaged with the subject matter of individuals supporting active-duty personnel and/or veterans over long periods of time.

The artists in Not Alone engage in building narratives about and with members of the Armed Forces and their families through media including photography, drawings, prints, sculpture, audio works, installations and 360 video. Their works offer perspectives on a variety of topics including veteran support networks, the experience of spouses and children of US military personnel and how veterans examine their own identity and personal relationships.”

“The exhibition Many Wars explores the complex psychological impact of combat on the individual through a series of photographs by Suzanne Opton. Opton’s Many Wars series personifies the effects of trauma as seen in the portraits of veterans taken at a VA clinic. Her soldier portraits, icons of the aftermath of the current wars, have sparked a passionate debate about issues of art and soldiering. Her photographs are included in the permanent collections of the Brooklyn Museum, Cleveland Museum, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Library of Congress, and Musee de l’Eysee among others. She has received grants from the NEA, NYFA, and Vermont Council on the Arts. Opton teaches at the International Center of Photography and is the recipient of a 2009 Guggenheim Fellowship.”

“Aftermath shows life and loss of many kinds, its lingering physical and emotional effects, and hope-filled survival tactics. In these, we are all susceptible and connected,” says Carol McCusker, Harn Curator of Photography. “Each photographer claims an oblique, moral imperative that cautions viewers against binary thinking (us/them, good/bad), urging instead a wider consciousness and compassion toward the repercussions for all involved.”

Aftermath: The Fallout of War—America and the Middle East is organized by the Harn Museum of Art and curated by Carol McCusker, Curator of Photography at the Harn Museum of Art. It will travel to the Gund Gallery at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio from January to April 2017; and The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art in Sarasota, affiliated with Florida State University, from September 2017 to January 2018.
