About Lewis Koch

Drawing upon aspects of photography, sculpture, assemblage and text, Lewis Koch calls attention to the often unremarked upon elements of everyday life. Over the past forty-some years, his work has been shown in garages, on kiosks and billboards, as well as in museums and galleries, with solo exhibitions in New York, London, Brussels, Seoul, Odense, Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles, among others. His work is in permanent collections throughout the United States, Canada and Europe, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Art Institute of Chicago, Smithsonian Museum of American Art, and National Gallery of Art (Washington, DC), Maison Européenne de la Photographie (Paris), Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, Whitney Museum of American Art (NY), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago). He has been honored with grants from the National Endowment for the Arts (1980, 1981); residencies at LightWork (1983); Nexus Press (Atlanta, 1993); and a state of Wisconsin Arts Board Fellowship (1994). As an artist-in-residence at Copenhagen’s Fotografisk Center, Koch created the web project 'Touchless Automatic Wonder' which provided an overview of his work in photography and assemblage prior to 2001. It was also the basis for a monograph (Borderland Books, Madison, 2009) with the same title. Examples of recent images and writing can be found on Facebook at lewiskoch.
