Artist Statement
Ranalli’s work is frequently characterized as conceptual-environmental and often based on chance effects. One series involved “choreographing” the drawings of snails in wet tidal sand and another the raking of large Zen Gardens in the sand dunes and beaches in Ireland, Nova Scotia and the Outer Cape.
In recent years Daniel has been photographing the unerased (and sometimes erased) chalkboards from classrooms at Boston University where he teaches. The images are then montaged digitally to create complex layers of meaning and mixing text and mark-making.
