“The cinema that inspires her, and the external eyes, act as the collective view of the female body - characters who are archetypes, reflecting mythical American ideals.
However, what Calvi wants to do with her photos is create mirrors in which we are a little more ourselves. Reflections that highlight our dark sides, our vulnerabilities and doubts. The camera as a psychoanalyst, as it were. That is why black and white and color photos alternate: the first represent a more analytical, reflective, conscious way of being, the second an explosion of raw, vibrating, uncontrolled emotions - also called ‘moments of being’ versus 'moments of non-being ’, a concept she, like the title of this series, borrowed from Virginia Woolf.”
