Angel Island in San Francisco Bay has been used for quarantine many times throughout its history. First, in 1891, a Quarantine Station was opened at Ayala Cove then known as Hospital Cove, where immigrants suspected of carrying Cholera, Smallpox, Yellow fever, typhus, Leprosy, and Bubonic Plague were kept in isolation.
In 1896 Bubonic Plague was believed to be carried on ships from Asia, all Chinese and Japanese passengers were indefinitely quarantined in the immigration station on Angel Island, while all other passengers were only subject to inspection.
Angel Island was also used to quarantine troops returning from the Pacific in WWII.
