Eric’s Digital Journal
Eric will discuss his two projects, Felicific Calculus: Technology as a Social Marker of Race, Class, & Economics in Rochester, NY and Life-Lines Throughout the US, and how what started as a photography project has led him into the realm of visual sociology and activism. He will talk about the basis for his work, which was a reaction to the labeling of the community surrounding his studio by many of his friends and colleagues. Upon learning that people were still utilizing the payphones in Rochester, he decided to collaborate with social scientists and community data researchers. These collaborations allowed the project to move beyond the photographic realm and outside the confines of gallery presentations.
Several make-up artists, hairstylists, and photographers all donate their time. I have the privilege of helping produce the prints for lasting memories.
Last night was the opening, and Phillip provided an excellent talk about the photographers in the exhibition. Thank you for the kind words and discussion at the portfolio reviews. The opening was in conjunction with @photonola.festival before the open portfolio walk.

For the first time, I have written a published article to go along with photographs from my project “Felicific Calculus: Technology as a Social Marker of Race, Class, & Economics in Rochester, NY.” Loupe Magazine, based in the UK, just released Issue 13, which features both the writing and my imagery. The article discusses what I have learned from my project and what I plan to do with this knowledge of others’ needs. The Loupe 13 Issue is focused on the idea of sustainability.
Thank you, AARP, for sharing the social activism endeavor that started as a photographic project.

For the past few weeks, the students in my Fine Print Workflow course have been tortured with color correction critiques. After three weeks, a few students had the breakthrough, which usually occurred around this time of visually identifying the correct colorcast in inkjet prints on the wall.
Nothing like a lazy rainy Sunday to be in the darkroom calibrating my PiezoDN negatives to my Kalitype process.
Black & White or Monochromatic, this call looks to explore how the reduction of color can enhance an image, create harmony out of chaos or tell a story more powerfully. The juror will be looking for how one photographs their subject and utilizes a monochromatic tonal scale to help with the intended impact, composition, and personalized style. Yes, the technique is essential, but in the end, the individual’s vision is more important than the process.
This Call for photography is open to all styles and photographic processes presenting Black & White or Monochromatic images and will be juried by Eric Kunsman.
Great news today, I finally made the Critical Mass Top 50. Happy to be included with so many friends and acquaintances I have met over the years.
